*Our gut health has been influenced by our Mother’s gut health* Did you know that the health of a Mother’s microbiome has an important role on her baby’s immune development, gut and overall health?!.. What is a microbiome you ask? It’s the billions of microorganisms that live inside our intestines, which communicate with our own cells to influence health. One of the biggest impacts on a Woman’s microbiome health is her diet… Specifically, including enough of the prebiotic fibres our healthy gut microbes like to eat… When a baby is born, it is exposed to its Mother’s bacteria and other microorganisms during vaginal delivery and also breastfeeding from the mother’s skin and her breastmilk. From the moment of birth, the exposure to microbes helps the baby start to develop its own microbiome. How amazing! The essential duties of a baby’s microbiome relate to the digestion and metabolism of breastmilk (or formula) and food later on, the development and activation of the immune system, the production of neurotransmitters that influence cognitive function and behaviour, among others. If you’re planning a pregnancy or are pregnant, I highly recommend you address any long-term gut issues you have, and / or ensure you’re eating lots of different plant foods in your diet, especially prebiotics. I hope this helps – Amanda x P.S. If you’d like to speak to a Dietitian about optimising your diet for pregnancy, please reach out as I’d love to help!
*Could food additives be one of your triggers?* There are 100s of additives going into our foods these days… When you analyse the ingredients list of many packaged foods, they contain many that are far from natural! From my years of experience supporting people with food intolerances, there are a bunch that are the worst for triggering a wide range of symptoms, including abdominal cramping, diarrhoea, allergy reactions, behavioural issues in children, irritability and more… Preservatives are some of the culprits, specifically Sorbates
, Benzoates
, 216, 218), Sulphites
, Nitrates
, Propionates
and artificial antioxidants
,
… I suggest start checking your food packaging to see what you find. I hope that helps – Amanda x P.S. If you’d like to work with a specialist Food Intolerance Dietitian to help you assess the role of food on your symptoms, please reach out as I’d love to help!

Mike and Kim came to me recently at their wits end. Their six-year-old son Charlie has become extremely emotional and clingy. He throws tantrums ALL THE TIME, finds it hard to relax and his teachers and medical team are querying an ADHD diagnosis. “What happened to our little Angel!?” Kim was querying a food intolerance because she had problems with certain foods as a child plus it appears some of the irritability comes after eating certain foods. They were desperate for my help because they were both feeling so exhausted and frustrated. The demands of attending to their boy was putting a strain on their relationship too. Only TWO weeks after our initial consultation Mike and Kim came back to see me almost speechless. They had seen a significant improvement after making the few small dietary changes I recommended. Tantrums were now less in frequency, duration and severity. “The teachers are reporting that Charlie is now sitting quietly and drawing for over an hour – something he never did before. Everyone at school is so amazed at the change. He seems so much happier!”. This story is so similar to those of the many children (and their parents) I’ve helped over the years since working in the area of food intolerances. If you or someone you know is struggling with their child’s behaviour, please get in touch because I could potentially help to make your/their life much easier. Following from my last post, I wanted to let you know about my FREE guided breathing meditation on my website (link below). It's 15 minutes of guided breathing techniques to activate the parasympatheric nervous system. It will help lower stress, lift mood and among others, support digestive function. The exercises you're guided through will be a helpful component to any Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) or Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO) management program, as well as for weight management and any chronic health condition. If you're suffering IBS or digestive issues, I recommend you follow along daily for two weeks and assess how you feel. I am confident it will offer you some relief... but will also teach you techniques to better manage your stress long-term, which is VITAL for IBS management. Enjoy. And don't forget to reach out if you're looking for an IBS / gut specialist Dietitian to help with a tailored dietary and treatment plan. I'd love to help. You probably already know that Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), digestive issues and food intolerances are highly linked to stress. Managing stress is JUST AS important a what foods we DO and DON'T put into our system. “I’m not stressed” my clients often tell me … but stress comes in many forms – whatever gets adrenaline and cortisol flowing and keeping your parasympathetic nervous system (rest and digest state) off. Think endless to-do lists, frustration in peak hour traffic, not getting enough sleep, drinking too much coffee (sorry it’s true), work and home pressures and even the negative self-talk you do when you look at yourself in the mirror or don’t believe in yourself! They key is to support keeping you in ‘rest and digest’ as much as possible throughout your day, but especially leading up to times of eating as to support better digestion. I know my gut and energy feels its best when I include deep belly breathing or meditation in my day, both of which are highly effective at communicating to our brain to switch on the parasympathetic nervous system – amazing! I have heaps of advice to share with you - please make a booking or get in touch if you're looking for an IBS and Food Intolerance Dietitian and Nutritionist in Adelaide for help.
Sarah (client’s name changed of course!) was getting dressed for work and feeling really self-conscious about how she looked in her favourite pants. She thought to herself “I look like I’m pregnant – and these pants feel SO TIGHT.” With a bloated belly and feeling irritated by the discomfort she feels on a regular basis, it seems like anything she eats makes her body feel awful, uncomfortably full and gassy…. I get it. This is such a common problem and Sarah is definitely not alone. I see patients regularly with IBS and bloating. Within a few sessions, Sarah found her clothes fitting comfortably again, bloating gone and feeling at ease - so she could focus on her work and things that actually matter. If you also struggle with bloating, please stop trying to ignore it - reach out so we can discuss how to get you feeling better too. It’s amazing how much your mental and emotional health can suffer when you’ve eaten something that upsets your gut. I’ve worked with many people, including a young woman yesterday, who’s food intolerances leave them feeling irritated, emotional and even anxious. It’s such a heart-felt experience helping people go from feeling overwhelmed and not sure how they’re going to get through their day, to understanding their intolerances, being able to manage them and feeling like their true-selves again. If you think you have a food intolerance, make a booking or please get in touch through my website – I’d really love to help you to feel better too xx
