This is a historically significant location. The original airstrip was constructed in the late 1950s by the Gunbarrel Construction Company as part of the infrastructure built along with the Giles weather station.
The roads and the airstrip were built around the same time (late 1950s) and the construction crew were encountering tribes of people we now know as the Ngaanyatjarra people for the first time. A very interesting piece of Australia’s history, read all about it in Len Beadell’s book “Too Long in the Bush”.
These days, the airstrip forms part of regular scheduled “runs” across the desert by light aircraft, supplying nearby Warakurna with mail and other supplies as well as ferrying passengers from Warakurna to Kalgoorlie or Alice Springs depending on the direction of the run. In other words, it is no longer a remote airstrip in the way it once was.
Having said that, it has all the features you’d expect from a remote area. There is one very basic shade structure. There are no toilets. Not everyone has keys to the locks on the gate, so you might have to haul your luggage through a gap in the fence. It’s an unsealed airstrip, so it’s dusty in dry weather and I’m not sure if you can land here in wet weather.
