Lisa qualified at the University of Cape Town Medical School, graduating with the class medal in 1990. She completed her specialist training in cardiology at the Alfred Hospital, Melbourne in 1997, and a PhD investigating the cardiovascular adaptation to pregnancy at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital and the University of Sydney in 2000.
