I was told by a "knowledgeable" person on a Facebook page that the engine rebuild I got at Oscar Mechanic was exactly the same as I'd get at any engine rebuilder- I disagree and I'll tell you why.
Firstly, they are a family business and what that means is, unlike an employee who may (for example) be thinking of handing in thier resignation the following week and doesn't care what happens to your engine after it leaves the workshop, David, Fred and Sam have a vested interest in the outcome of thier work- the ramifications affect them personally. This is shown in thier keen interest of each and every engine they are working on.
Secondly, from the first phone call David was warm and friendly- he was the only engine builder I had rang who actually invited me to come by and look around the workshop and chat in person. Throughout the build, in fact even to this day, he has never been too busy to chat about my engine in a calm, knowledgeable and engaging manner.
Thirdly, although a lot of engine builders will also use genuine parts, the difference I found is the guys at Oscar mechanic are one of those that have a focus on building an engine that has longevity and reliability rather than catering to the excitement of creating an engine with big power. This isn't to say that they don't recognise the benefits of aftermarket improvements e.g, an intercooler is a definite upgrade, it just means that their ethos is about recreating what Toyota designed but with slight improvements in technology that time has given us.
In conclusion I wish to express that my experience with Oscar Mechanic was nothing other than positive. Communication was an unhindered two way street with these humble yet knowledgeable gentlemen and it felt like good, old fashioned business the way it should be.
Oh, and my engine- it is my expectation realized.
