About Gum San Chinese Heritage Centre

Gum San Chinese Heritage Centre brings to life the tale of Chineses gold prospectors walk from Robe S.A. to the Ballarat and Bendigo goldfields. In transit they camped by a creek and found what turned out to be the richest alluvial gold field in Australia, and ended up staying and founding the town of Ararat.

The centre is run by the volunteer group the Friends of Gum San and is open Thursdays to Sundays and public holidays from 10am to 3pm.

The story of the trek and hardships of the Ararat goldfields are depicted in movies, lifelike dioramas and historical displays with plenty of activities for children and adults alike. Gold panning, calligraphy and photos in Chinese garb are only some to the things that can fill in an hours visit..
