I was roadtrippin Australian when my girlfriend got a very simple urinary tract infection for which she just needed a single dose antibiotic. I am a 29yo doctor from Italy, not registered in Australia, but I always bought antibiotics or medicines both in Australia and around the world showing my registration card. The 3 young (and apparently not very experienced about medicine) did not know the antibiotic I asked for and totally refused to sell us the antibiotic, probably thinking I was cheating about being a doctor (they did not even check my card). Even when they noticed the town's doctor could not see us they did not help us. For law they are not supposed to sell antibiotics without prescription or to doctors not registered in Australia but I don't think it was the real reason.
