Chow’s Table.

Owned by Head Chef Mal Chow, it is an acclaimed restaurant with innovative modern Chinese fusion interpretation of classic Asian dishes.

Located near House of Cards and Gabriel Chocolate (tip, do a chocolate tasting before your meal), Chow’s table has a welcoming, well lit ambience. Service is prompt, friendly.

The dishes are designed to be shared. Which is the way many Asian diners would have their meals. You order 3 small entree and 3 mains out of the list for the whole table. There is no option to split the order(s) to try everything on the menu, although you can add additional dishes if you need to.

Can’t decide what to order? Ask your waitress. They’re very familiar with the menu. Or check out their instagram for inspiration.

The squid toast is a highlight. Crisp, yet not oily. A crunchy morsel of sesame, seafood filling and toast. One of the best we have had. Steak tartare was also perfectly done. Fresh and everything just perfect together. French yet instead of bread, there is a Chinese doughnut that works surprisingly well.

Radish cake was crisp on the outside, gooey on the inside. The home chef in me prefers less flour and more radish but that is perhaps a subjective matter. It goes without saying that Entree was a highlight. Dishes are however, small.

Mains. There is a bowl of fluffy, white rice to share. So you won’t be hungry. The Ma Po tofu. It’s a huge bowl. The tofu is made locally and so very melt in your mouth. Almost to-fu fa in consistency. The Schezuan peppercorn however gives it a kick. If you’re not familiar with this, you have been warned.

Prawn laksa. A light, almost tempura batter with a large, single prawn. But please de-vein them in the future! Why go to the effect of removing half the shell (head/tail are intact) and not removing the vein? Laksa broth was light and fragrant.

Pork belly mostly melt in your mouth. Though we thought the pork hadn’t quite fully integrated the flavours of the broth.

I suggest pairing dishes with the Beers on offer. It is a small but well curated list. My taste buds were somewhat overwhelmed with the barrage of peppercorns and flavours that wine would have been a difficult order.

We left very, very full. And satisfied.

High chair and child friendly ; open grass right outside. And Gabriel’s offer a promising ice-cream or chocolate offering for after.
