Travel Agent Finder
20 July 2023Flt Lieutenant John “Dinga” Napier Bell of Farina, 7 hours north of Adelaide, South Australia, was the 1st South Australian pilot killed in action in WWII while on a secret mission in France to rescue General Charles de Gaulle’s family from the Brittany area of occupied France on the 18th June 1940.
He is commemorated in the annual “Farina v The Rest of the World Cricket Match”, recently held on Sunday 18th June, 2023 which was followed by a Memorial Day and Service.
He and the members of his aircrew are buried in the French village of Ploudaniel (where an annual service is held); and he is commemorated at the recently restored Farina War Memorial as well as on the grave of his grandfather, William Wallace Bell at the Quorn Cemetery.
Farina became a “Ghost Town” when the “Ghan” was re-routed in the 1960’s but for 8 weeks a year (May to July), the “can-do” spirit of the Farina Restoration Group comes to life with the town’s “pop-up” bakery and its historic wood-fired underground oven churning out amazing baked goods such as pies and pasties for tourists travelling along the Oodnadatta and the Birdsville Tracks. This and the commemoration of John Napier Bell results in the outback highway town coming to life, vastly swelling the town’s normal population of 15.
